چکیده

We describe a method for constructing multi resolution models (MRM) of complex triangle meshes and show how these representations can be used to create view dependent adaptive approximations of triangle meshes on the y with guaranteed approximation error. We use a modiied one-sided Hausdorr distance as a geometrically meaningful error value between the original and the simpliied mesh. Since this distance is parameterization-independent, its use as error measure is superior to the use of the L 1-Norm between parameterized surfaces. The proposed multi-resolution model supports progressive transmission, smooth geomorphing of diierent levels of detail approximations, mesh compression and selective error tolerance editing. Various examples demonstrate the excellent results that were achieved by this new method with triangle meshes from diierent application areas such as volume rendering, terrain modeling and the approximations of parameterized surfaces.

Multiresolution Feature Extraction from Unstructured Meshes

We present a framework to extract mesh features from unstructured two-manifold surfaces. Our method computes a collection of piecewise linear curves describing the salient features of surfaces, such as edges and ridge lines. We extend these basic techniques to a multiresolution setting which improves the quality of the results and accelerates the extraction process. The framework is semiautomat...

Fairing of Non-Manifold Models

The concept of fairing applied to irregular triangular meshes has become more and more important. Previous contributions constructed better fairing operators, and applied them both to multiresolution editing tools and to multiresolution representations of meshes. In this paper, we generalize these powerful techniques to handle non-manifold models. Our framework computes a multilevel fairing of ...

Multiresolution shape deformations for meshes with dynamic vertex connectivity

Multiresolution shape representation is a very effective way to decompose surface geometry into several levels of detail. Geometric modeling with such representations enables flexible modifications of the global shape while preserving the detail information. Many schemes for modeling with multiresolution decompositions based on splines, polygonal meshes and subdivision surfaces have been propos...

Non-linear Subdivision of Univariate Signals and Discrete Surfaces

During the last 20 years, the joint expansion of computing power, computer graphics, networking capabilities and multiresolution analysis have stimulated several research domains, and developed the need for new types of data such as 3D models, i.e. discrete surfaces. In the intersection between multiresolution analysis and computer graphics, subdivision methods, i.e. iterative refinement proced...

Local Reconstruction and Visualization of Point-Based Surfaces Using Subdivision Surfaces

Point-Based Surfaces, i.e. surfaces represented by discrete point sets which are either directly obtained by current 3D acquisition devices or converted from other surface representations, are well designed for multiresolution storage and transmission of complex objects. Unfortunately, visualization of point-based surfaces requires to develop specific rendering techniques (e.g. splatting) since...
